Does The Librarian Recommend…

Written by:

The Education of Dixie Dupree by Donna Everhart?

I had to think long and hard about whether or not I recommend this book, and the answer I finally came up with is “well, it depends.”

The book is well written, no question. Donna Everhart has a way of writing simply but descriptively and putting the reader into the story. However, whether or not you find this to be a “good” book is going to largely depend on how strong of a stomach you have and whether you are looking for a light read or something that is going to punch you in the guts repeatedly.

Because, if you are a more sensitive person, this book is going to destroy your soul.

The Education of Dixie Dupree has some deeply, DEEPLY disturbing content. There is domestic violence against women and children. Substance use. Suicide and worst of all, child sexual assault. Graphic child sexual assault.

If these are not things you can stomach, do not pick up this book because the darkness is relentless. While (slight spoiler) it does end on a positive note, I found myself almost upset that it did end that way, because after everything these characters go through, maybe it was not the best way to end things.

Still, the book is excellently written, compelling and crushing, so DO I recommend it? Yes, if you are well prepared for what you are getting yourself into. 4 out of 5 stars.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
